What is Toastmasters

Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs. The organization's membership exceeds 358,000 in more than 16,800 clubs in143 countries. Since 1924, Toastmasters International has helped people from diverse backgrounds become more confident speakers, communicators, and leaders.

国际演讲会在中国

In 1999, the first Toastmasters Club in China was established.

In 2007, District 85 was set up officially.

In 2012, District 85 was divided into District 85 (North and East China) and District 89 (South China), as District 85 accommodated 230 clubs with more than 6,000 members.

In 2016, District 85 club number will be over 200, and it will be split into two districts: District 85 and District 88.

In 2019, there'are four districts in China, including District 85, District 88, District 89, District 118.

1999年，中国大陆第一个Toastmasters俱乐部在上海成立，后发展迅速。

2007年，第85大区正式成立。

2012年，第85大区拥有230家俱乐部，超过6,000名会员，正式拆分为第85大区（华北地区，华东地区）和第89大区（华南地区，香港澳门）。

2016年，第85大区俱乐部数量超过200家，拆分为第85大区和第88大区。

Education is an important part of every Toastmaster’s journey, and it is a critical aspect of all club meetings around the world. Develop and practice communication and leadership skills in the safe, supportive environment of your club, working through projects and assignments that enable you to build real–world skills in a variety of disciplines. Learn at your own pace in a proven curriculum that was built on four guiding principles that have been in place since Toastmasters was founded in 1924:

Experiential learning – By giving speeches and fulfilling leadership roles, you practice and improve.

Peer feedback – Grow and improve through honest and supportive peer evaluation.

Mentoring – Experienced mentors encourage, guide and support you in your goals and help you to achieve more than you thought possible.

Self-paced program – Develop skills at your own pace and comfort level.

What does a Toastmasters regular meeting look like?

Everything in Toastmasters revolves around the club. Most clubs have around 20 members and meet weekly or biweekly, with each meeting lasting 1 - 2 hours. Every meeting has 3 main sessions:

Table Topics

Prepared Speech

Evaluation

Introduction of Three Sessions:

Table Topics:

A Table Topics Master (TTM) will host the session. The TTM raises questions and anyone in the meeting can choose to deliver a 1~2 minutes impromptu speech on the stage.

Table Topics is a long-standing Toastmasters tradition intended to help members develop their ability organizing thoughts quickly.

Prepared Speeches:

Members prepare speeches according to manual objectives, and deliver a 5-7 min speech on the stage. This session is to help members develop public speaking skill.

Evaluation:

Evaluation is a golden session in every Toastmasters meeting. Every prepared speech is evaluated by an Individual Evaluator (IE). The IE observes the speaker’s performance and delivers a 2 – 3 min evaluation speech to help members grow.

In addition, other roles serve as evaluation as well, such as Timer, Grammarian, Ah-counter who observe the whole meeting and share their comments in the end of the meeting. A General Evaluator is to comment on the meeting’s organization and evaluators’ speech performance.

Each meeting is hosted by a Toastmaster of the Day (TMD) or Toastmaster of the Evening (TME) depending on the meeting time.
