卓别林的第一部有声电影The Great Dictator（大独裁者）讲述的是一个虚构的独裁国家的故事，但明显是影射纳粹德国和希特勒。卓别林在片中分饰两角：独裁者和犹太理发师(Jewish Barber)。

电影的主题是对纳粹德国和希特勒进行辛辣的讽刺，核心还是表达对爱、自由和希望的歌颂和热切期盼，这是人作为情感主体最根本的需求，同时也是作为社会成员最高尚、代价最昂贵的追求目标。

理发师因为帮助反对独裁者的前冲锋队司令舒尔茨逃跑而被与舒尔茨一同关进集中营，当他们偷了军服从集中营逃出来后，在逃亡途中理发师被独裁者的部下误认为独裁者，而此时独裁者则被误认为理发师而抓回了集中营。他们随着入侵奥德利（即奥地利）的部队到了奥德利的首都。在此独裁者将在集会上向全世界发表讲话，但是理发师极度恐惧和慌乱。

在他讲话之前，先由宣传部长（明显是影射戈培尔）暖场。该部长说道：天佑元首，胜利归功于伟人。如今，民主、自由和平等都是些欺人之谈，抱持这种观念的国家不可能进步，它们都成了前进的障碍，因此，我们把这些都彻底地废除了。今后，所有人都要绝对服从、服务于国家利益，都给我小心点。所有的犹太人和非雅利安人的公民权利都将被剥夺（理发师本来垂头丧气地坐着，听到这里，他神情痛苦地抬起头来，紧张地思考着）他们都是劣等人，乃是国家公敌，痛恨并且鄙视他们是每个雅利安人的义务。从今以后，这个国家就并入了Tomainian帝国，这个国家的人民也要服从于我们伟大领袖制定的法律。Tomainian的独裁者、Osterlich的征服者、世界的未来帝王……！

这时，舒尔茨对理发师说：you must speak 。理发师紧张地说：I can’t 。舒尔茨又说：you must,it’s our only hope。理发师听后，口中默念：hope...神情逐渐从慌乱转变为凝重，眼神也变得坚定而专注，一个勇敢的人出现在我们眼前。他义无反顾地站上演讲台，发表了一段四分钟激情澎湃的著名演讲。演讲逻辑严密、富于哲理、文采斐然，而且演讲的内容也是电影内容的总结，演讲内容和电影情节融为一体，相互支撑，这样的结构堪称完美。

The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men’s souls,has barricaded the world with hate,has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want,our knowledge has made us cynical,our cleverness hard and unkind,we think too much and feel too little. More than machinery,we need humanity,more than cleverness,we need kindness and gentleness,without these qualities,life will be violent, and all will be lost.

The airplane and radio have brought us closer together. These very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men,cries out for universal brotherhood,for the unity of us all.

Even now,my voice is reaching millions throughout the world,millions of despairing men,women and little children,victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me, I say,do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass，and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die,liberty will never perish.

Soldiers,don’t give yourselves to brutes men who despise you,enslave you, who regiment your lives,tell you what to do,what to think, and what to feel,who drill you,diet you,treat you like cattle,use you as cannon fodder!Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men—machine men with machine minds and machine hearts. You are not machines!You are not cattle!You are men!You have the love of humanity in your hearts, you don’t hate,only the unloved hate,the unloved and the unnatural.

Soldiers,don’t fight for slavery,fight for liberty!In the 17th chapter of Saint Luke it is written: the kingdom of God is within men. Not one man nor not a group of men,but in all men—in you!

You the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness!You the people have to make this life free and beautiful,to make this life a wonderful adventure!

Then in the name of democracy,let us use that power!let us all unite!let us fight for a new world,a world that will give men a chance to work,that will give youth a future and old age a security.

By the promising of these things,brutes have risen to power. But thy lie!They don’t fulfill that promise,they never will!Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people.

Now let us fight to fulfill that promise!Let us to free the world-to do away with national barriers, to do away with greed,with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason,a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness.

Soldiers,in the name of democracy,let us unite!
