As we wrap up the year and get ready for the next one, it’s worth taking a look back at how far we’ve come. By any measure, 2022 was a historic year with democratic values under assault around the world.

We saw it in Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, in the unchecked spread of disinformation, and in the growing number of leaders who refused to stand up for the basic principles that make democracies function.

But despite these threats, what gave me hope this year was seeing so many people around the world fighting back. In 2022, we saw voters reject anti-democratic candidates at the ballot box. An international consensus began to form around steps we need to take to address the climate crisis. And around the world, ordinary people, especially young people, stood up for their basic rights.
